What does the counselling service offer?

We offer a free, confidential counselling service in Fife, Scotland provided by fully trained and registered practitioners. 

This service is for those who have been cared for in the maternity wards at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. We provide counselling not only for parents but also for family members and close friends who have been affected. In addition, we offer a counselling service to hospital staff who have been impacted by challenging work-related events.

We have resources that can help you, regardless of where you were treated. Please read our How we can Help page for more information, or feel free to reach out to us for a chat.

All you have to do is ask a member of staff at the hospital’s maternity ward to refer you to the Amazing Grace free counselling service. They will provide you with a leaflet containing the contact details of our counsellors. Alternatively, you can contact them using these details:

Yes, you will need to be referred by somebody at the Victoria Hospital, Kirkcaldy. 

Yes, your counsellor will discuss confidentiality with you during your first session.

Yes. You can receive counselling after a miscarriage, provided you were cared for in the maternity wards at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.

Yes, we support all pregnancy-related issues, including stillbirth. We also offer support during subsequent pregnancies, which can be challenging after a loss or difficult pregnancy.

Yes, we understand many pregnancy can be a worrying time and we aim to support as many people as possible.

Alternatively, if you need to talk to someone right away, you can use the SAMARITAN 24hr free helpline call 116123. They can support you until you have your counselling in place.

Yes, this service is not only there for the parents, but also for family members and close friends who have been affected.

Approximately 8-10 sessions of free counselling can be provided initially, and more can be available at your counsellor’s discretion.

Counselling is available both online, or in person, depending on your preference. This is best discussed with each individual counsellor. 

Qualifications will vary however all of our counsellors are BACP or COSCA registered.

This depends on the availability of the individual counsellors; however, we aim to have an appointment with in two weeks of initial contact.

Your counsellor will introduce themselves and will explore with you what you are hoping to get from counselling. You will be given time and space to tell as much of your story as you want to share. Questions may be asked for clarification, but you are always free not to answer any question. Don’t worry if you need to cry or become emotional. The session should last for about an hour. If you want to continue, another appointment will be made.

No, but the counsellor may be able to help you make more sense of the decisions you have to make.

Yes, there are links to websites such as Sands that provide resources for counsellors. In addition, there are training courses available for counsellors working specifically in this area. A resources section will also be coming soon to this website.

Not through Amazing Grace, but details are on the website for additional support, e.g. the Sands forum. Sands have a search for local groups you can attend in person or an online community to easy access.

Please have a look through our short list of organisations, we tried to include resources to cover most needs. 

This is a normal and understandable feeling, and there is no timescale attached to your referral.  

In addition, if you have learned about Amazing Grace months or even years after a difficult pregnancy and did not receive a referral at the time, please contact the maternity ward you were connected to and ask to be referred to Amazing Grace.

Yes. This service is 100% free and we will never ask you to contribute towards it. 

The Amazing Grace service requires a referral from the medical staff at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. As long as you were cared for at Victoria Hospital, it doesn’t matter where you currently live.

If you did not receive care at Victoria Hospital, please look through our short list of organisations that offer useful information, helplines and forums.

Counselling provided can be for anyone impacted. Please ensure you discuss who will be in attendance with the individual counsellor at the time of making your first appointment.

Amazing Grace is a service that provides counselling following difficult pregnancies or loss, we understand these difficult times can bring to light many other issues. The 8-10 sessions you may need will be your time to cover these topics.
